Origin: England
Description: The Oakmen are the most common tree faerie
found in England. Sometimes they are
part of the tree like Greek Hamadryads and sometimes they are dwarves with large heads and red toadstool caps.
Disposition: The Oakmen offer enticing food to humans who
pass through the forest. The traveler
shouldn’t eat it, however. Its poisonous
fungi disguised by faerie glamour. The
Oakmen get really mad and dangerous if someone cuts down the their tree. They
protect the wild animals of the forest they inhabit and will punish humans that
harm them.
I've only heard of the Hamadryads. Poisonous fungi with a glamour...*shudder* I've lost my apetite...
ReplyDeleteI know. Eating strange fungi is always a bad idea or a bad trip!
DeleteSounds like a fae version of tree-hugging environmentalists! haha. You're posts are always so great!
ReplyDeleteThere is something magical about those old oak trees though. You can imagine something special lives among the old branches.
DeleteSo glad I found your blog today! (Via the A-Z Challenge; thanks for visiting my blog too. I agree: Bert the Vegas Showgirl would definitely work.)
ReplyDeleteI just read through your last several posts. The Dick Cheney image was a perfect match. Thanks for the morning chuckle!
Glad you enjoyed the post. The Dick Cheney picture made me chuckle all weekend.
DeleteThis one reminds me of the WIP I'm working on rewriting. I have trees and humanity fighting each other. ^^
ReplyDeleteI have oakmen in a story I'm working on. I portray them as wise men that always knows what is happening in a wooded area in a city.
DeleteI absolutely love tree creatures! :) I am so happy you are keeping up with the challenge :)
ReplyDeleteI love tree creatures, too. There is wisdom in trees.
DeleteReminds me of the Ents in the LOTR. Great idea for a theme, featuring mythical features from various cultures. There are so many of these creatures I've never heard of till now!
